Habitus sociology

In sociology, the term “habitus” was developed into a technical term by Norbert Elias and Pierre Bourdieu. Because of their studies in philosophy, both were familiar with the development of the habitus concept since ancient times.

Bourdieu proposed a ‘reflexive sociology’– in which one recognises one’s biases, beliefs and assumptions in the act of sense-making – long before reflexivity became fashionable. Habitus epitomizes Bourdieu’s interest in linking phenomenological and symbolic interactionist perspectives (sometimes equated with the subjectivist view) with the more structuralist approach (sometimes equated with the objectivist view) of American and some European sociologists. Individuals ‘habitus’ is associated and influenced by the social facts such as the knowledge of ideas, values, norms, and behaviours in contemporary society. This notion is further supported through Bourdieu’s demonstration of identity and cultural background through immigration. In sociology, Habitus comprises socially ingrained habits, skills and dispositions. It is the way that individuals perceive the social world around them and react to it.
